Royal Avenue Residents’ Association – List of achievements

The Royal Avenue Residents Association has as its objective the furtherance of the community interests of its members, and the improvement of the amenities affecting those members. Some of the many ways in which this objective has been achieved over the years are listed below.

In addition to liaising with other local bodies and intervening regularly on local planning and development issues, some notable individual achievements include the following;

  • Closing of Royal Avenue as a through road thoroughfare.
  • Re-routing of main sewers to avoid deep excavating in the Avenue.
  • Re-gravelling of the central area and the planting of new trees.
  • Improving the appearance of the paved area shared with Kings Road by repaving; the erection of “No feeding pigeons” signs; regular mechanised sweeping; installation of bollards & railings to prevent vehicles parking on the pavement; moving the telephone booths to preserve the view down the Avenue to the Hospital; liaison with McDonalds to ensure litter control and collection, and to control noise and odours.
  • Overseeing the Neighbourhood Watch Scheme and maintaining close contact with the police for the security of the Avenue.
  • Collaboration with the planning authorities on preservation of the traditional architecture of the Avenue.
  • Installing sleeping policemen in Saint Leonard’s Terrace as a counter measure to speeding vehicles using the road as a short-cut route.
  • Advising on the development plans affecting traffic flows and pedestrian access in Sloane Square and Kings Road.
  • Installing double-yellow lines around the Avenue outside to discourage parking, especially at weekends.
  • Installing dog litter collection boxes for the central area.
  • Removing parking from the South end of the Avenue.
  • Impedeing access for scooters on the central area by re-arranging the railings.
  • Re-installing benches on the piazza.
